CA-IDMS… one of the top mainframe software development and database systems from years gone by. ADS/O for the screens, IDMS calls for database operations. Good stuff, if you know how to use it. Compare to Model 204 (also known as M204), Software AG Natural and ADABAS, CA-Datacom (IDEAL and Datacom/DB), and MAPPER on the Unisys mainframes.More productive than straight COBOL, but not as powerful as the true 4GL environments like Focus and RAMIS. One thing that drives customers to modernize is the license cost. For example, the State of Iowa reports that they saved $296,413 in FY 2005 by negotiating a common license agreement with CA to support 3 agencies. That’s great, that these savings could be had — but it’s sobering to realize that if the savings were that large, the ongoing expense surely isn’t $1,000 per year. It’s still a 6-fingure number. And that doesn’t take into account the fact that all of the mainframe software vendors are raising the fees every year. Then there is the problem of impending retirement of the IDMS knowledgeable programmers. it’s like the Year 2000 (Y2K) problem – just not with the hard deadline. At some point in time, the systems can’t be maintained. So what do you do? The mainframe is secure, it works well, as long as changes are not required and as long as there is money to pay the fees. But the first “rush” change that’s needed in response to new laws or the offerings of a competitor, or the first time 4 or 5 programmers retire at the same time… life gets interesting. If you want...

PowerBuilder is an integrated development environment (IDE) used to create applications. PowerBuilder 12.5 has good integration with the Microsoft. In fact, the vendor will tell you that “PowerBuilder IS .NET”. Though originally designed to compete with Microsoft developed IDE’s (primarily Visual Studio), the PowerBuilder .NET integration was created to allow continuity for the PowerBuilder project and to take advantage of the .NET platform that many developers are now using to create business critical applications. PowerBuilder can be thought of as a .NET language, with full Common Type System (CTS) language support. The PowerBuilder 12.5 for .NET IDE is preferred by many application developers as it is a fast, cost-effective and easy application development software. The typical PowerBuilder business application is high performance and data driven. Technology used in the PowerBuilder .NET integration is also unique in that it continuously evolves to accommodate the latest software advances on the Microsoft platform and, of course, the business needs of the users. This ability to keep up with advances in VUI (Visual User Interface) advances as well as functionality creates valuable competitive advantage for businesses that use the PowerBuilder for .NET platform. One of the reasons the PowerBuilder to .NET platform is favoured as rapid application development software by some developers is its speed and simplicity. This development speed is attributed to the graphical software construction tools and the original PowerBuilder “‘Data Window”’ technology. This function, brought forward to Powerbuilder 12 from the older PowerBuilder versions allows developers to use minimal coding to create data rich applications. Thanks to DataWindow, developers using PowerBuilder for the .NET environment may only need to write...

Software development is when a user desires to create new software or, usually, upgrade their already existing system for a more efficient one. The users can be as diverse and large as an entire corporation or organization, a team that relies heavily on said software or even a small group of individuals. Once they establish that they wish to create a new system or upgrade said existing system, they will be required to devise and implement a master plan which will lead to the creation of this new system. Several steps are required to complete this software development process. This includes, but is not limited to, working out what the system needs to accomplish, developing it accordingly, writing out the code, thorough testing and debugging, and finally launching, should everything work out. This development process can take as few as a motivated programmer to several or even hundreds of developers. To establish what is required from the system, in other words, the problem(s) that it must solve, there has to be research. Sometimes the problem can be a common one, requiring the creators of new software to make theirs to solve the problem in a way that puts their product ahead of their competitors. However the problem can be entirely new, requiring the team to come up with a method of resolving it. Finally, it can be a recent problem that has been discovered, making the previous software obsolete, requiring a new creation to resolve said problem. And so, at this point of software development, the goals that are meant to be attained are set out. Once these objectives...

Power builder is an integrated development environment used to create applications. PowerBuilder to .Net is a combination of PowerBuilder and Microsoft’s .Net platform; the latest in software migration that has revolutionized the world of applications development. One of the reasons the PowerBuilder to .Net platform is favoured as rapid application development software by developers is its speed and simplicity. This development speed is attributed to the original PowerBuilder to .Net ‘DataWindow’ technology. This function imported from the PowerBuilder Classic version allows developers to use minimal coding to create data rich applications. Thanks to DataWindow, developers using PowerBuilder to .Net only need to use five lines of coding script to apply custom business logic. The simplicity created by the PowerBuilder to .Net technology through its declarative programming environment, coupled with increased levels of abstraction reduces complexities of development...

Visual basics software is programming software created by Microsoft to aid in the development of programs and applications. The.Net framework is also a Microsoft windows creation designed specifically for use in applications developed on a windows platform. It is basically a large base class library that makes it possible for language interoperability to take place (i.e.: it allows each programming language, in its framework to use codes written in other programming languages). The VB to.Net integration promises to revolutionize program and application development by optimizing the individual functions of visual basics and .Net framework software. VB to.Net is basically an introduction of various syntactical changes and migration to the visual basics programming software. In fact, these VB to.Net features may make it a bit harder to acclimatize, for programmers who started of using Quick basic and GW basic. Though it was easier to upgrade from these program builders to MS visual basic while building up on basic programming knowledge, an upgrade from VB to.Net will not be so simple. This new program has optimized programming by altering coding rules; increasing the number of low-level constructs that are exposed and enforcing a number of programming practices. The major change visible in the VB to.Net program is the IDE. The Integrated Development Environment in this upgraded version presents differences in interfaces. The property page design for the Active X design for instance has been replaced by a property grid display. That said though, VB to.Net still retains the options available in the visual basics software; just displayed in an easier and more flexible manner. Another major change is in...
